5 top tips for picking eyewear to match your personality

We interviewed Janet Harrison, Colour Me Beautiful Consultant, Personal Stylist & Image Consultant from Greater Manchester

They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression. In truth, it takes just moments for others to form an opinion – and most of it has little to do with what you say. Posture. Presence. The details you choose to wear. Few things define a face quite like a pair of spectacles. The right frames offer more than clarity; they offer character. A reflection of who you are, and how you wish to be seen. Chosen well, they become a signature. Chosen hastily, they can feel like a compromise. So how do you find a pair that feels entirely your own? We spoke with Janet Harrison, personal stylist and Colour Me Beautiful consultant, about the art of choosing eyewear with intention. Here’s what we learned.

1. Shape matters

Think of your glasses as the architecture of your face. The right structure enhances your natural features, bringing balance and definition, while the wrong one can feel out of place. A strong jawline is softened by rounder frames; a round face benefits from angular lines for contrast. Heart-shaped faces are often flattered by cat-eye or aviator styles, while those with oval faces have the most freedom to experiment. But theory can only take you so far. What works on paper doesn’t always work in the mirror. Janet’s advice?

“Try on as many pairs as you can. Your glasses are a daily commitment – it’s worth getting them right.”

2. Let your style speak

Eyewear isn’t just functional. It’s an extension of your personal aesthetic, a detail that speaks before you do.

  • Prefer classic tailoring? A structured tortoiseshell frame exudes quiet confidence.
  • A more laid-back dresser? Lightweight slim rimmed frames in earth tones or pastels will sit naturally within your wardrobe.
  • Love a bold fashion moment? Oversized frames, bright colours, or sculptural shapes can turn glasses into a statement piece.

Some people treat their eyewear as a constant – a timeless, unchanging staple. Others swap styles like they do their shoes, adapting them to mood and occasion. There’s no wrong approach. What matters is that they feel like you.

“Your glasses should feel like an extension of yourself. If they don’t, you haven’t found the right pair yet, says Janet.

3. PLAY WITH COLOUR

Colour influences perception more than we realise. Deep blacks and navy tones command a sense of authority. Warm tortoiseshells add softness and versatility. Translucent pastels feel modern and effortless. A pop of red, blue, or gold? Playful, distinctive, unexpected.

There are, of course, traditional rules about which tones complement different skin undertones – but Janet’s stance is simple:

“If you feel good in a colour, that confidence will shine through. And that’s what people will remember.”

4. Consider your lifestyle

Your glasses need to work with your life, not against it. If you’re constantly on the move, lightweight, flexible frames will stay comfortable throughout the day. If you spend long hours at a screen, blue-light filters and anti-glare coatings are a wise investment. If you’re often outdoors, consider impact-resistant materials.

Practicality matters, too. Frames that sit too low may have you peering over them, while those that ride too high can fog up in the cold. Small details, but ones that make a difference when worn every day.

And don’t forget practicality – where your frames sit on your face can make a big difference. If they rest too low, you might find yourself overlooking them. If they sit too high, they’ll fog up when you step outside on cold days. And trust me, these small details have big impacts when they affect your vision.

Need an adjustment? A well-fitted frame is essential – not just for comfort, but for how you feel wearing them. Visit any Robert Glass branch, and we’ll make sure they sit just right, free of charge.

5. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS

Where you store your glasses matters. The golden rule? If they’re not on your face, they should be in their case. A hard protective case keeps them safe from the perils of daily life, whether they’re jostling around in a handbag or perched precariously on a crowded desk.

Steer clear of hot spots – no, literally. Leaving your glasses on a car dashboard in the sun can warp the frames or damage the lens coating. Likewise, glasses and pockets are a dangerous combination; they might fit neatly, but one awkward move and you’ll be left with bent temples or worse. Treat your specs with a little security, and they’ll stay in tip-top shape.

“When you find the right pair, you’ll just know. It’s like finding the perfect coat or the perfect shoes—it just clicks,” says Janet
